Anyone who traversed Joburg`s clubland on a Saturday night during the tumultuous Eighties will remember The Chelsea Hotel in Hillbrow. Known sometimes as the Boogie Barn and Chelsea Underground the club downstairs was famous for its live concerts by the cream of South African pop and rock artists. Anyone who became someone (or sadly some cases stayed no one) at some point graced the Chelsea stage, delivering high octane sets for their adoring audiences. The fans ran the whole gamut of age, class, color, sexuality, and musical taste: from the fadgets of eVoid and wildly colorful ethno-dancettes of Via Afrika , the New Romantic styles of Petit Cheval and The Helicopters to the post-punk angry young acolytes of Tribe After Tribe and Dog Detachment and National Wake. Captured together for the first time on streaming and download platforms, Saturday Night At The Chelsea features 16 seminal South African artists.
